The film “Innocence of Muslims” has sparked off violent protests and riots that resulted in deaths and injuries in many parts of the world, including several countries in our region. The continued circulation of this film is likely to cause disharmony or feelings of ill-will between different groups in Singapore. Any act which promotes disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious or racial groups is an offence under Sec 298A of the Penal Code.
2 In view of security concerns that have arisen following the release of the film, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken the pre-emptive measure of asking MDA to make the request to Google to block online access to the film to prevent similar violent incidents from taking place here. We note that Google is currently considering our request.
3 We would like to urge members of the public to refrain from re-posting the video or adding comments that may further inflame the situation.
