The Book Launch of 'Slaying The Dragon - Singapore's Fight Against Drugs', 16 November 2006

'Slaying the Dragon - Singapore's Fight Against Drugs' is a book documenting Singapore's successful battle against the abuse of heroin.

2 Commissioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and written by local writer Mr Tan Ooi Boon, the book chronicles the stories, thoughts and achievements of several prominent figures in Singapore's fight against drugs and depicts how the Home Team and its partners acted in concert to tackle the drug scourge.

3 Through the integrated approach anchored by the four key pillars of enforcement; preventive drug education; treatment and rehabilitation and aftercare and continued rehabilitation, the book highlights the significance of the challenges faced by the various agencies and community partners, and how we managed to ensure success.

4 'Slaying the Dragon - Singapore's Fight Against Drugs' will be launched by Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs on Monday 20 November 2006.

5 Guests to the book launch include key figures of Singapore's anti-drug effort from the past and present, including representatives from key community organisations, as well as regional and international law and drug enforcement partners.

6 'Slaying the Dragon - Singapore's Fight Against Drugs' serves as a record of Singapore's approach to tackle the drug problem. It is hoped that the book will help to inform and inspire the next generation of drug enforcement officers as well as those involved in the treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare of drug offenders. In addition, it will also be a valuable source of reference for scholars and members of the public who may be interested in how Singapore was able to bring the drug situation under control. The book will be available in libraries, community centres, schools and other educational institutions.
