Every day, our Home Team officers perform their duties with little fanfare. Last month, over 600 officers who’d gone beyond the call of duty were recognised for their contributions at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) National Day Awards Investiture 2018. We spoke to three officers who exemplify the Home Team’s spirit of service and dedication.

A Meaningful Career, and More
Ms Lina Lim, 48
Internal Auditor (Audits & Compliance), Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE); Recipient of the Commendation Medal (2018)

I chose to join the Home Team because… I really believe in what SCORE does, and wanted to contribute to its meaningful work.

One thing I want to share with others about my work The Home Team is unique because it encompasses 10 organisations that serve the country by keeping it safe and secure. In the Home Team, you can make a positive impact in many ways, and SCORE does this is by rebuilding the lives of ex-offenders by helping them enhance their employability potential.

How I feel about receiving the Commendation Medal Thankful! Working at SCORE has allowed me to deepen my skills and work on a range of cross-functional projects such as the SCORE Appreciation Awards and the Home Team Festival. I love my work and am very grateful to be recognised for it.

Alert at the Airport
Senior Checkpoint Inspector 2 Tan Chee Kiang, 45
Assistant Duty Officer, Airport Command, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA); Recipient of the Efficiency Medal (2018)

What I do at work I’m responsible for manpower deployment for our ground operations at Changi Airport, and work to ensure that our clearance counters are optimally manned. As part of our duties, we’re trained to assess passengers quickly and accurately.

One thing that people don’t know about my work I’ve been with the ICA for 25 years, serving at Woodlands Checkpoint for four years and Changi Airport for 14 years. I was also appointed to Singapore’s Chennai Overseas Mission from 2011 to 2013. Besides processing visa applications and helping with immigration-related matters, I also offered consular assistance to overseas Singaporeans.

How I feel about receiving the Efficiency Medal I love being a member of the Home Team, and serving the public. I feel happy and honoured to receive this recognition, and will continue to do my best!

Strength in Different Forms
Deputy Superintendent Puteh Binte Shariff, 53
Deputy Head Investigation, Traffic Police, Singapore Police Force (SPF); Recipient of the Commendation Medal (2018)

What I do at work I lead a team of officers at the Traffic Police and oversee the investigation of major traffic accidents. My work requires me to be strong in different ways; when I give guidance to our officers in their investigations and on the ground, and also when I have to convey news to the families of those involved in accidents. Such meetings can be emotional, and we need to be strong to support the families.

What I love about my work Investigative work is very unique, and every case is different. Besides serving with the Traffic Police, I was with the Serious Sexual Crimes Branch for five years, and then the Secret Societies Branch for another five years. I’ve also been deployed on overseas peacekeeping missions to Timor Leste in 2009 and Nepal in 2015.

How I feel about receiving the Efficiency Medal I feel really proud and honoured. I joined the Force 35 years ago, and every day has been a learning journey for me.
