The Volunteer Special Constabulary or “VSC” in the Home Team stands with us to prevent, deter, and detect crime;  preserving Singapore’s security.  A key partner of the Home Team, the VSC engages the community to embrace security awareness and to play a part in ensuring the security of their loved ones. VSCs enhance the work of the Home Team through their passion, expertise and time.

The VSC is an important component of the Singapore Police Force and is vested with equal powers of a police officer and the opportunity to enforce law and order in Singapore.

The VSC comprises volunteers from all walks of life, bonded with the same aspiration to prevent, deter and detect crime by complementing the Singapore Police Force. VSC officers don the same police uniform and patrol the streets, participate in anti-crime operations or even high-speed sea chase, regardless of their civilian career or profession.

As a VSC officer, you will be trained and supervised, work in partnership with the regular officers in the execution of their police duties.  Our philosophy of involvement includes providing you the necessary training, orientation, opportunities for personal development, as well as awards and recognition for good service.

VSC officers also help to maintain law and order during large-scale public events such as:

  • National Day Parade
  • Festival Season Light up Events
  • Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix
  • International Conferences

What You will Learn

You will undergo six months of non-residential basic training at the Home Team Academy and Police Cantonment Complex. The basic training includes policing procedures, law lessons, Police Defence Tactics, use of firearms, drills and first aid. The training is conducted twice weekly from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, and on alternate Saturdays from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Once posted to SPF divisions or units, you will still undergo continuous training and upgrading of policing skills.

Your Commitment

Upon completion of training, you will be posted to one of the Police Land Divisions or a specialist unit such as the Airport Police Division, Police Coast Guard, Transport Command, Traffic Police, Training Command, Criminal Investigation Department or the Central Narcotics Bureau.

You may choose your desired posting but the eventual posting will be subjected to the availability and needs of the SPF. All postings can offer VSC officers equal and interesting opportunities and major events to perform their police duties.

You are required to perform a minimum of 16 hours of duty each month. VSC officers usually perform duties after office or working hours, mostly on weekends. Each tour of duty could last from a four-hour shift to a full shift of 12-14 hours, depending on operational requirements. You could also be deployed with regular Police Officers or volunteer peers, depending on the requirements of the tour of duty.

Being a VSC officer is very dynamic and engaging. You will get to interact with the members of public through various police activities. These activities include proactive patrolling to keep the streets safe, helping people in distress and assisting victims of robbery or road traffic accidents.
