HTN: Could you share more about yourself and how you chanced upon the HOME Awards back while you were still studying?

I am 18 this year and am currently in my final year of studies in Higher NITEC (Marine Engineering). I got to know about the HOME Awards when my school organised a scholarship talk in Year one.

When they informed me about the marine fire-fighting unit, it piqued my interest, as I never knew that there was such a unit in the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)!

HTN: What is your childhood dream? Is it different from what you are going to be (i.e. a Home Team Officer)?

My childhood dream was to be a fire fighter as I could be a hero to people whose lives are in great trouble. My father had served his National Service with SCDF and shared with me interesting and exciting accounts of his days with SCDF. The accounts he shared with me played a large part in influencing me.

HTN: Why did you choose to apply for the HOME Award?

I chose to apply for the HOME Award because I believe it would give me a better future and a stable job in the years to come, and at the same time, I can continue to further my studies. I am also very interested in SCDF’s DART. Hopefully, with determination and hard work, I will be able to be part of DART in the near future!

HTN: How did you feel when you received the news that you were one of the HOME Awardees? Was it a very proud moment for both your family and yourself?

To be one of the HOME awardees is definitely one of the biggest achievements I ever had in my life. I felt ecstatic and honoured to have received it I've had downfalls in the past that made me feel that I have let my parents down. However, with this award I believed that I have made them proud. I know that by attaining this award, it would definitely fuel my passion and desire to achieve greater heights.

HTN: Were you inspired by anyone and would you would like to thank them? i.e. parents, teachers, etc?

I would like to thank my parents for being my number one supporters and for always encouraging me in hard times. I know that they may have been hard on me at times, but they did it with good intentions.

HTN: Could you tell me how the HOME Award has changed your life?

I have learnt to be more disciplined and more focused in my schoolwork, to work harder and push myself to try to reach the highest peak possible.

HTN: What is one piece of advice you would give to your fellow juniors who may want to apply for the HOME Awards?

To my fellow juniors who would want to apply for a scholarship, the HOME Team award is definitely worth considering. Not only can you have a stable, meaningful and secure career, there will also be plenty of chances for you to further your studies and realise your dreams!
