More than 4,000 Full-Time National Servicemen to attend Inaugural Enhanced Career Fair

1. More than 4,000 full-time National Servicemen (NSFs) from the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force are expected to attend the inaugural Enhanced Career Fair at the Lifelong Learning Institute, where 77 employers, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and Continuing Education and Training Centres will offer employment and educational opportunities to the servicemen. The two-day event, which started today, is jointly organised by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in collaboration with the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence (ACCORD).

2. The Enhanced Career Fair, one of 30 recommendations by the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS), seeks to facilitate servicemen's transition to the workforce or higher education after full-time National Service (NS). It includes the Career Skills Workshop, where NSFs are equipped with job search skills, such as written and verbal communication, and how to prepare and increase one's chances of success in a job interview.

3. Director of National Service Affairs, MINDEF, Brigadier-General (NS) Tung Yui Fai, highlighted that the Enhanced Career Fair was a deliberate effort to provide NSFs more options as they reach the end of their full-time NS. BG (NS) Tung, who visited the Enhanced Career Fair this morning, said, "Through ACCORD and WDA, we are able to tap onto a larger network of employers and educational institutions across different industries and sectors so that our servicemen can find a career or field of study that is relevant and of interest to them." Ms Shirlyn Ng, MHA's Senior Director, Human Resource Division, said, "Besides providing more targeted job-matching opportunities and a wider range of employment and learning options, we also hope that our NSFs take this opportunity to think about the career options they are interested in pursuing further in life." Mr Francis Lee, Director, Career Services Division, WDA said, "The Enhanced Career Fair is a great opportunity for NSFs to find out more about the hiring sectors and the job requirements, and for employers to tap on this source of manpower."
