Rejection of Application by Transformative Justice Collective to Cancel or Vary Correction Direction Under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act 2019

1.   The Minister for Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs has rejected an application (the “Application”) by Transformative Justice Collective (“TJC”) to cancel or vary the Correction Direction issued to them on 19 May 2023, pursuant to section 11 of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act 2019.

2.   On 23 April 2023, TJC had posted a false statement of fact concerning the capital sentence that was meted out to Tangaraju S/O Suppiah on its Facebook (FB) page.

3.   On 19 May 2023, a Correction Direction was issued to TJC, requiring them to insert a correction notice at the top of their FB post, stating that the post contained a false statement of fact, together with a link to the Factually article which sets out the correct facts. TJC was also directed to post the correction notice as a new post on its FB page.

4.   The conditions for issuing the Correction Direction are satisfied, and the Application did not disclose any grounds to the contrary. After having carefully considered the Application, the Minister for Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs has decided to reject it. TJC has been notified of the rejection.
