Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Number of Various Sentences Meted Out to Children and Young Persons Investigated for Offences in the Past Three Years

Question:

Mr Louis Ng Kok Kwang: To ask the Minister for Home Affairs of the children and young persons who are investigated for offences in the last three years, how many are (i) issued with stern warnings (ii) issued with conditional warnings (iii) charged and obtained a discharge amounting to acquittal (iv) charged and obtained a discharge not amounting to acquittal and (v) convicted.

Answer:

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law:

1.   Between 2020 and 2022, a yearly average of (a) 873 children and young persons under the age of 16 were issued with stern warnings or conditional warnings for offences investigated by the Police or Central Narcotics Bureau; (b) 94 were charged and convicted; and (c) none were charged and obtained a discharge, whether amounting or not amounting to an acquittal.
