Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Police Action Against Contractors Who Take Deposits Without Intent to Carry Out Renovation Works

Mr Lim Biow Chuan: To ask the Minister for Home Affairs whether the police will take action against contractors who take deposits for renovation works without any intent to carry out such works.

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Ministry for Law:
Depending on the facts and circumstances of the case, contractors who deceive victims into placing deposits for renovation works without any intent to carry out such works may be liable for cheating offences under section 420 of the Penal Code. Where there are offences disclosed, the Police will investigate accordingly.
