Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on the Number of Convicted Murderers Handed Life Sentences Since 1 January 2013

Question:

Mr Murali Pillai: To ask the Minister for Home Affairs (a) since 1 January 2013, how many persons have been convicted for the offences of murder within the meaning of section 300(b), (c) or (d) of the Penal Code 1871 (“Code”) and have been punished by the court with imprisonment for life instead of the death penalty; and (b) how many persons have been convicted for murder within the meaning of section 300(a) of the Penal Code and was sentenced by the court to death.

Answer:

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law:

1.    Between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2021, five persons were convicted of the offence of intentional murder within the meaning of section 300(a) of the Penal Code, and sentenced to death.

2.    In the same period, 15 persons were convicted of and sentenced based on the other categories of murder within the meanings of sections 300(b) to 300(d) of the Penal Code. Among them, one was sentenced to death, and the other 14 were sentenced to life imprisonment.
