If you are already volunteering with one of our partner religious organisations, you can sign up as a Prisons volunteer as well, to provide support and programmes for incarcerated offenders.

Spiritual guidance can help in an offender’s rehabilitation. It provides the necessary emotional and mental support for them to cope with life's experiences. Spiritual support also forms an important aspect of an offender’s psychological well-being. It can give them the resilience to maintain a positive outlook in life.

Who is eligible

Join us if you are at least 21 years old and wish to help offenders, and are currently volunteering with any of our partner religious organisations.

Alternatively, you may apply with the partner religious organisation directly, indicating your interest to serve as a religious volunteer at Prisons.

Upon successful application and matching, you will be notified to attend Basic Prison Training.

What you'll do

As a volunteer, you bring with you your expertise and impart your knowledge to offenders through various religious programmes and activities. These includes leading religious services and offering religious counselling.

You can also help to link the released offenders back to the community, helping to facilitate the reintegration process.

Role of Religious Programmes and Services

Our volunteers based at religious organisations have an important role to play in providing religious-based programmes and in assisting offenders’ integration back into society.

While prisons is a secular organisation, we recognise that spiritual guidance provides the necessary emotional and mental encouragement for offenders to cope with life experiences. Spiritual support forms an important aspect of offenders' psychological well-being to help them maintain a positive outlook on life.

Many religious organisations also offer post-release befriending services to facilitate offenders' reintegration into society.

Training

As a new volunteer, you will undergo Basic Prison Training to familiarise you with the prisons environment and the do’s and don't’s during your volunteering.

You will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to conduct effective and purposeful sessions for the offenders.

You can look forward to attending accredited developmental courses. These training opportunities will enhance your skills and competencies in your role as a Prison volunteer.

Dialogue sessions

You will also be invited to attend regular dialogue sessions with prison staff supporting the institutions which you are based at.

The dialogue sessions allow the institution's staff and volunteers to discuss issues related to your volunteering stint.
