What is the Role of YRCP Volunteers?
The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) recognises that incarceration affects not just inmates, but their entire families. Many families face hardship even before their loved ones are incarcerated. The Yellow Ribbon Community Project (YRCP) mobilises community support to help these families overcome these challenges and emerge stronger.
As a YRCP volunteer, you will:
Provide timely outreach – Engage family members of newly admitted inmates through phone calls and home visits. Offer crucial support during this challenging period.
Connect families to resources – Help link families with agencies such as Family Service Centres, Social Service Organisations or resources from grassroots divisions for further support.
Journey alongside families – Serve as prosocial support for families and help build a community where we look out for one another.
What Training Will You Receive?
You will receive comprehensive training to confidently support the families of those incarcerated:
Onboarding: New volunteers will attend a half-day onboarding session, typically held on Saturday mornings. This session includes interactive activities and equips you with the necessary skills to engage families impacted by incarceration effectively. Your volunteering journey begins after completing this training.
First-year training: All new YRCP volunteers will undergo training via e-learning modules on restorative practice and self-care and a one-day befriending classroom lesson. This training equips you with the relevant correctional knowledge and skillset to confidently support families-in-need.
Ongoing growth: After your training, you will have access to developmental courses at your convenience, allowing you to continuously enhance your skills as a volunteer.
