Singapore Ratifies the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Visa Exemption

Published: 13 April 2018

1.     Singapore has ratified the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Visa Exemption (AFAVE).  The Instrument of Ratification was deposited with the ASEAN Secretary-General by Singapore’s Permanent Representative to ASEAN, Ambassador Tan Hung Seng, on 13 April 2018. The ratification of the AFAVE reaffirms Singapore’s commitment to facilitate secure and seamless travel for citizens of ASEAN Member States within the region.

2.     The AFAVE provides the framework for ASEAN Member States to negotiate and conclude separate bilateral protocols, to exempt citizens of other ASEAN Member States from visa requirement for a period of stay of up to 14 days. This visa exemption will apply to citizens from ASEAN Member States holding a valid national passport, and travelling for the purpose of visitation only.

3.     Singapore’s ratification of the AFAVE will not impact on Singaporeans travelling within the ASEAN region, as Singaporeans can already visit other ASEAN countries without a visa for up to 30 days.  More information on visa requirements can be found on MFA’s website.
