1. 70 Justices of the Peace (JPs) were appointed by President Dr Tony Tan on 1 September 2015. Of these, 49 JPs were re-appointed and 21 JPs newly appointed.
2. JPs are distinguished Singaporeans who have made significant contributions in their professions, the public service, social services and the community at large. As JPs, they serve as Visiting Justices of the Prisons, mediators / referees in the State Courts, or marriage solemnisers in the Registry of Marriages. They may also perform the duties of the Magistrate conferred on them by any written law. JPs are appointed by the President under Section 11 of the State Courts Act.
3. The 70 JPs are appointed for a term of 5 years commencing 1 September 2015. They are listed at Annex.
