1. Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam is on an official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, from 5 to 6 December 2018. This is Minister Shanmugam’s first official visit to Vietnam as Minister for Home Affairs. He is accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Singapore Police Force.
2. Minister Shanmugam met with his counterparts, His Excellency Senior Lieutenant General To Lam, Minister of Public Security and His Excellency Le Thanh Long, Minister of Justice. During the meetings, both parties reaffirmed the good security and legal cooperation between Singapore and Vietnam, and discussed opportunities to further strengthen the cooperation between both countries.
3. Minister Shanmugam also signed and renewed the “Cooperation Arrangement in Preventing and Combating Transnational Crime” with Minister To Lam. The Cooperation Arrangement was first signed between Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security in 2006. It sets out broad areas of cooperation in eight transnational crimes, namely, Terrorism, Illicit Drug Trafficking, Trafficking in Persons, International Economic Crime, Money Laundering, Cybercrime, Arms Smuggling and People Smuggling. This new Cooperation Arrangement will be valid for five years, until 2023.
4. During his visit, Minister Shanmugam also called on the Prime Minister of Vietnam, His Excellency Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and the Head of the Party Central Commission for Internal Affairs, His Excellency Phan Dinh Trac.
