Part-time Public Safety and Security Programme

1.    The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), with support from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has introduced a part-time Bachelor of Public Safety and Security with Minor programme to train and upskill those employed in or are intending to join the safety and security industry.

 

2.    The curriculum integrates theories with practical examples and adopts an inter-disciplinary approach. Graduates will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Public Safety and Security. Through the programme, they will learn to recognise and address contemporary safety and security threats and issues in areas such as cybercrime and cybersecurity, violent extremism and disaster risk and resilience.

 

3.    Prof Tsui Kai Chong, Provost of SUSS, said, “With security threats becoming more complex encompassing both offline and online activities, there is greater need for highly trained safety and security practitioners to deliver effective solutions. This part-time programme allows working professionals the flexibility to advance their career, while gaining industry-relevant practical skills and knowledge, which they can immediately put into practice at their workplaces.”

 

4.    This is echoed by Mr T. Raja Kumar, Deputy Secretary (International & Training) of MHA, who said, “MHA has supported the introduction of SUSS’ part-time Bachelor of Public Safety and Security with Minor programme as it contributes to capability development in the public safety and security sector in Singapore. The programme is also aligned with the Home Team’s commitment to develop our officers and offer them multiple pathways to achieve their career aspirations.”

 

5.    Students taking the part-time degree are required to complete a total of 130 credit units (cu), inclusive of 40 cu from selected Minors – Criminology, Crisis Management or Psychosocial Intervention.

 

6.    Dr Razwana Begum, Head, Public Safety and Security Programme, added, “This programme is designed to professionalise the field of public safety and security. Students will be exposed to courses in law, criminal justice, psychology, management and communications. Public safety and security is a growing field, with plenty of opportunities for the right candidates. This programme can help graduates already in this field to advance their career and open up other exciting job opportunities in the public, private or people sector. This part-time programme enables working adults to benefit from a flexible learning schedule that can accommodate their work commitments.”
