If there’s one thing about being an officer with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) that Sergeant (SGT) Amirul Asraf Bin Abdul Aziz hopes to share, it’s that the work is multi-faceted, dynamic and deeply fulfilling. From enforcement duties and supervising offenders to working with partners and conducting school talks, he explains why joining the Home Team was the right choice for him. 



Why did you join the Home Team?
I relish challenges and strongly believe that I can do my part to safeguard Singapore, especially given the complex homeland security threats we face. That’s why I applied for a Home Team Diploma Sponsorship during my Polytechnic days. 

I first got a taste of what it's like to be a member of the Home Team when I served my National Service (NS) with the Singapore Police Force, and I joined the CNB after completing my NS. 

Tell us more about your daily work.
For the past two years, I’ve been a Team Member with a dynamic group of officers in the CNB’s Enforcement Division. Besides gathering intelligence, planning operations and apprehending drug abusers, my team also engages with drug supervisees to ensure that they don’t relapse, and help them reintegrate into society.

You may be surprised to learn that our job doesn’t only revolve around operations and apprehending drug abusers; we also work with many key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). In cases involving financial hardship or childcare difficulties, for example, we will make referrals to MSF.



How do you educate the community about the dangers of drugs?
As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” That’s why we also conduct Preventive Drug Education programmes such as talks and exhibitions in schools, to increase awareness of the dangers of drugs among youths. We strongly believe that the community can help us to achieve a drug-free Singapore.

What advice do you have for those considering a career in the Home Team? 
Being a Home Team officer has helped to broaden my perspective in many ways. To those thinking of joining the Home Team, I highly recommend that they find out more from our various career websites and to talk to family members and friends who’re in the Home Team.

What do you love about your work as a Home Team officer? 
Singapore is well-known for its low crime rate and for being a safe country to live in. I get a sense of satisfaction from seeing the direct impact of my work, as well as from ensuring that we can all go about our lives in safety.
