Verification of seller identity

All Facebook users (buyers and sellers) can create an account with email or phone verification. Users are then allowed to list items for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

When we detect suspicious behaviour, we may ask a  user to go through additional verification checkpoints. The user must pass these checkpoints to continue using Marketplace.

Spend a few minutes learning more about a seller by looking at their profile to see the friends that you may have in common, reviewing their Marketplace activity and reviewing any ratings that they may have received.

Use of in-platform secure payment solutions

Facebook Marketplace does not process payments on the platform, and transactions are conducted off-platform.

You can safeguard your transactions by using secure person-to-person payment solutions. Alternatively, consumers can choose to meet in-person to complete the transaction, and perform payment after receiving the items.

If you have questions or concerns about an order you place, or the products, you should contact the third-party seller directly before completing your transaction.

Maintenance of transaction records and user data

Facebook Marketplace does not process payments on the platform, and transactions are conducted off-platform. As such, Facebook Marketplace may  not have visibility or information on a user’s transactions.

You can do your part by keeping all communication with sellers within the platform. This will help you find your communication records should you have problems with your transactions.

Where appropriate, information may be made available to regulators, law enforcement or others who are investigating scams.

Reporting and dispute resolution mechanism

Facebook Marketplace allows users to report sellers or suspicious listings to the platform for review against our Commerce Policies.

Users can report through the following steps, and look for a Report link on the listing or on the seller's Marketplace profile.

Users can also leave reviews and ratings to inform the community about their experience.

Other features

Preventing unwanted interactions

Marketplace Messenger filters messages from accounts that have suspicious elements through a spam folder. Using  a mixture of behavior signals and message data signals, we identify potentially risky accounts and we move the Marketplace message threads involving these risky accounts to the Spam folder.

People who receive these messages are not notified and only see these messages if they go to their Spam folder and click on the message. They are then given the additional reminder that the message comes from a potentially risky account and of steps they can take to protect themselves

Empowering users with tools to protect themselves against scams

People sometimes interact with someone who appears trustworthy when it’s really a scammer or imposter. These accounts can be hard to identify at first.

Apart from filtering out spam, we’ve started to introduce inline anti-scam warnings to educate people on ways to spot scams and which can be triggered by the following requests to pay in advance, phone number or email sharing to communicate outside Messenger, sharing of off-platform links, links to payment apps, sharing verification codes.

Filtering out listings from sellers outside Singapore

Marketplace in Singapore is a local community product that enables users to browse and buy, or list and sell items to other Facebook users in their area.  We filter out listings from sellers  who are outside Singapore.

Preventing Counterfeits

To prevent counterfeits from surfacing on our platforms, we invested in automated systems to review and proactively block listings that may be selling counterfeits. We are constantly enhancing these measures and rely on our collaboration with rights holders to help us efficiently tackle these issues and protect their intellectual property (IP) rights.

Prohibiting Stolen Goods

Our commerce policies prohibit the sale of stolen goods on our platforms. In addition to enforcing these policies, we also have designated, specialized teams that work with law enforcement to respond to legal requests from all over the world.

Other Safety Guidelines

We encourage users to follow basic safety and health guidelines when transacting. If users plan to meet in person, we recommend arranging the meeting in a public, well-lit area. They can create and share their meeting plan with a trusted friend or family member through Messenger.
